Saga Dawa

May 26 - June 24 marks the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar - Saga Dawa.  Saga Dawa is an important month for Tibetan Buddhists because the Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana all occurred during this month.  Throughout Saga Dawa, it is said that the merit of all actions (virtuous and unvirtuous) are multiplied by 100,000 times.  And 100 million times on Saga Dawa Düchen [June 9]!

It is beneficial to abstain from eating meat and avoid killing or harming any creature during this time.  Also, it is an excellent time to do additional practice, make offerings, release animals, and most particularly, guard your body, speech and mind against all negative actions.

White Umbrella Mantra Accumulation

This year Venerable Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche is requesting the International PBC Sangha to accumulate the mantras of the Buddha White Umbrella at least through July 2016 during the Annual PSL Dzogchen Summer retreats.

White Umbrella is an emanation of Tara who is renowned as a great Buddha with the profound ability to subdue and pacify negative forces. She holds aloft a white parasol, which symbolizes her protection of all beings. She is also Buddha Samantabhadri and Prajnaparamita, who manifested from the crown of Buddha Shakyamuni, and is the consort of Buddha Amitayus.

There are four scanned pages of the White Umbrella practice, which are excerpted from the White Umbrella sadhana of the great master and terton Raga Asye according to the instructions of Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche.

We are accumulating the long mantra of White Umbrella (pgs 9-11), as well as her Heart Mantra and Condensed Heart Mantra (pg 12).

After you accumulate the mantra during your meditation session, remain in meditation for as long as you have time, abiding in the true nature.

Conclude by dedicating the merit and making sincere aspiration prayers for the immediate happiness and enlightenment of all beings.

"White Umbrella is the embodiment of all the buddhas of the three times, and mother of all the buddhas. She is the most powerful, renowned, great buddha that removes all obstacles, negativities, curses, black magic, and all of the “eight fears,” including fears that arise due to all the different elements, as well as bad omens and nightmares. Anything that is disturbing us. For cultivating peace of mind and happiness, White Umbrella is very powerful.
As the great master Karma Chagme Rinpoche (Raga Asye) said, “This is the most powerful practice. When you practice this, no matter what happens, there is no one who can hurt you, no matter how powerful or strong they are. It is like wearing vajra armor that can protect you from every problem and every fear in samsara.” This is what the great master Karma Chagme Rinpoche said in the colophon of this text.
This is a renowned practice in all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism, especially Nyingma and Kagyu. Of course, this teaching was taught by the Buddha. Among all the Vajrayana teachings, this teaching is from the Outer Tantras. Yet many great masters like Guru Padmasambhava combined Outer Tantras practices together with the Inner Tantras in a very special way, which is also true for this practice.

This teaching was brought to Tibet at the time of Guru Padmasambhava and the great master Shantarakshita. When Buddhism was just beginning in Tibet, Dharma King Trisong Deutsen was given ten different daily practices by Guru Padmasambhava, and this White Umbrella practice was one of them. Ever since, it has been a very popular practice."
